By Rev. Laurie Manning
The Committee on Ministry for Churches in Discernment is entering an exciting new phase as we expand our capacity to serve NCNCUCC congregations.
New Leadership, Fresh Vision
We’re celebrating the transition of committee leadership to Rev. Penny Nixon whose experience and passion for supporting churches in discernment will guide COM-D into its next chapter. We’re grateful for Rev. Kelly Colwell’s dedicated service as chair during this foundational year and excited about the fresh perspective Penny brings to our ministry. (Committee members are: chair Rev. Penny Nixon, Rev. Kelly Colwell, Rev. Jim Mitulski, Rev. Laurie Manning and Associate Conference Minister, Rev. Rhina Ramos).
Conference Annual Meeting Opportunities
As we announced at this year’s Conference Annual Meeting, COM-D will be actively seeking new members who share our commitment to supporting churches through times of transition. We’re particularly interested in connecting with folks who bring expertise in:
- Congregational systems and governance
- Conflict mediation and healthy communication
- Small church ministry
- Pastoral transition processes
- Church revitalization and transformation
- Real Estate development
- Affordable housing experience
Understanding COM-D’s Unique Role
While COM-A works with individuals seeking ministerial authorization and COM-B provides ongoing oversight and support for authorized ministers, COM-D focuses specifically on congregations navigating seasons of discernment and transition, building relationships now with congregations. We support churches facing questions about their future, pastoral changes, structural decisions, property options, or seeking resources for revitalization.
Resources Now Available
Check out the growing collection of church resources now posted on the NCNCUCC website! COM-D has curated practical materials covering church health and vitality, team building, conflict resolution, and specialized resources for small churches. These tools, developed by experienced practitioners, offer concrete guidance for congregations at every stage of their journey. https://ncncucc.org/resources-for-churches/
Expanding Our Reach
Beyond recruiting at Conference Annual Meeting, we’re developing comprehensive outreach strategies to better connect with churches who could benefit from COM-D support. This includes enhancing our web presence, conducting targeted surveys to understand congregational needs, and building relationships with churches who may not know what resources are available to them.
We’re also exploring whether to maintain official membership requirements by association or develop a broader network of consultants and specialists who can be called upon as needed for specific situations.
How You Can Help
If you’re interested in joining COM-D or know someone whose skills and heart for congregational ministry would strengthen our work, please reach out. We meet monthly and are committed to being a practical, accessible resource for churches navigating change.
Churches currently working through discernment processes, pastoral transitions, or questions about their future direction are encouraged to contact COM-D for consultation and resource sharing.
