Journey for Justice: Walking Our Faith in Action

As we approach World Refugee Day on June 20, United Church of Christ congregations are invited to put faith into motion through Journey for Justice, a flexible, faith-centered fundraising challenge from Church World Service. Inspired by the 42.5 million refugees worldwide, participants commit to a “42.5 challenge”—walking, biking, or moving in ways that fit their lives—while raising funds to support refugees and displaced families both globally and here in the U.S.

Grounded in Jesus’ call to “welcome the stranger” (Matthew 25:35), Journey for Justice offers a tangible way to live out our faith beyond the pews. Funds raised provide critical support—from emergency shelter and food to long-term resettlement, legal aid, and community-building ministries.

The impact of this work is real. In Tanzania’s Nyarugusu refugee camp, Matumaini Narcecine is transforming her community through a CWS-supported farming program. Once limited by systems that denied women economic independence, she now feeds her family, earns an income, and trains other women to do the same. “Women are following me so I can train them,” she shares—an example of dignity, leadership, and hope taking root.

Journey for Justice reminds us that when we move together in faith, we help cultivate that same hope—ensuring that our neighbors, near and far, can thrive.
