By Conference Minister Diane Weible
Many of you have heard me say many times that I see our work as the Conference (defined as all our churches, pastors and lay leaders) is to help support each local church as they seek to be the hands and feet of Christ in their communities and to work together to support ministries that let all of us be the hands and feet of Christ in the world.
I want to lift up one aspect of that today—nurturing our young people to be leaders in the church today and to build a solid foundation for their leadership into the future. In the Northern California Nevada Conference, we do this in a number of ways.
The first is our camp program. Registration is still open for youth camps that will be held at Camp Tamarack and at Camp Cazadero. We have a Counselor-in-Training camp opportunity as well for older youth to prepare to move from being a camper to being a counselor. I am a leader in the church today in part because of the tremendous influence camping had on me when I was in high school. Further, many of today’s leaders in the Conference (and around the UCC) participated in the NCNC (or other Conference) camping program when they were young.
We are also looking for counselors to serve at each of our camps. If you are interested in learning more, please visit our website at ncncucc.org. If you want to support our youth by applying to be a counselor, here is the direct link to the application.
The second way we are supporting our youth is through the Youth Stewards program at Annual Gathering. The program is mentioned in our Moderator’s letter to the Church (see below) but I want to highlight it here too. We are looking for 12 youth who will serve as Youth Stewards and would love to see a diversity of churches represented. The Youth Steward program will benefit both the Conference and our youth. If you know of a young person who is willing to serve as a Youth Steward at Annual Gathering in June, please encourage them to apply. And, of course, all of our youth are encouraged to attend the Annual Gathering Youth Program, which is another great way to support both our youth and the future of the church.
NCNC’s mission is to “support, unite and nurture the church of Jesus Christ in local settings and ministries.” Supporting our youth and nurturing all of our leaders is such an important ministry and I look forward to the ways we will all share in this journey together.
